A Better Priest, A Better Covenant

Oct 18, 2026  •  Jeff O'Harra

What does it look like to keep fighting a war that is already over? That striking image opens up a profound exploration of Hebrews 8, a chapter that confronts one of the most common struggles in the life of faith: living as though we still owe a debt that has already been paid. The central message is built around the idea of a better covenant, one that does not rest on our promises to God but on God's promises to us. Drawing from the prophet Jeremiah, we are reminded that God declared 'I will' seven times when describing this new covenant. Not 'you will.' Not 'try harder.' God himself took on the weight of the agreement. That realization changes everything about how we approach obedience, guilt, and our sense of worthiness before God. The spiritual lesson here is not that effort is meaningless, but that the source of our effort must shift from fear and performance to gratitude and a transformed heart. When we understand that God writes his law on our hearts through his Spirit rather than handing us a list of rules to keep in our own strength, obedience becomes something that grows from the inside out. This is the rest that Hebrews points us toward, not passivity, but the deep settledness of knowing the work has been finished and we are invited to live from that place.
