Crossing of the Red Sea

Jan 25, 2026    Jeff O'Harra

We find ourselves standing at the edge of the Red Sea with the Israelites, caught between impossible circumstances and an approaching enemy. This powerful narrative from Exodus 14 reveals a profound truth about our spiritual journey: God often leads us to places where we cannot escape by our own means, forcing us to trust Him completely. The Israelites went from marching boldly with hands raised high in worship to crying out in fear when they saw Pharaoh's army approaching. How often do we do the same? We praise God when things are going well, but the moment we face insurmountable obstacles, we forget His faithfulness. The Red Sea crossing represents more than a historical miracle—it symbolizes our baptism into Christ, our complete separation from our old life of sin, and our identification with our Savior. Just as the Israelites were baptized into Moses under the cloud and through the sea, we are baptized into Christ, covered by His Holy Spirit, and separated forever from our past. The waters that saved Israel drowned their enemies, signifying that when we come to Christ, our old life is buried and we rise to walk in newness of life. God doesn't set us free to remain comfortable in Egypt; He sets us free to follow Him into the wilderness, where we learn to walk by faith and not by sight. This journey challenges us to stop living by our five physical senses and start trusting in the God who parts seas and makes pathways through impossible situations.
